The main product of this business is silica (SiO2) and called fumed silica, which is produced by combustion of tetrachlorosilane in hydrogen-oxygen flames. Tokuyama provides the product under the Reolosil— brand name.
Fumed silica is used in various applications and products, such as reinforcement of resins, thickening (to prevent dripping) of paint materials, and polishing of semiconductor wafers. One of the largest applications is for silicone, to provide reinforced strength to molded articles of silicone resin. The silicone molded articles have property of chemical stability and is resistant to temperature changes. In the automobile industry, they are used extensively as gasket materials to seal automobile parts under a severe environment of engine rooms.
Due to its durability and performance as electrical insulator, silicone is used in the electronics information industry as various parts such as covering & protection materials, cellular phone numbering pads, and in other areas. In the construction industry, silicone is used as a sealing material to increase the air tightness of windows and doors. Fumed silica is used in various products we use everyday.
Used for a wide variety of applications, the business of fumed silica is expanding along with growing demand for automobiles, household electric appliances and infrastructure throughout Asia and especially in China. In March, 2005, Tokuyama expanded it's annual production capacity by 5,000 tons, and became a leading Asian supplier with total production of 20,000 tons a year. In addition to responding to a robust demand, Tokuyama also aims to expand the business further by developing new fields.
