The NF Business produces and sells microporous film, which is made by filling polyolefin (polypropylene and polyethylene) with an inorganic filler (calcium carbonate) and stretching it. Microporous film allows permeation of moisture but not water, blocking the passage of bacteria and microparticles larger than 0.2µ. With these features, microporous film is widely used in many fields, including sanitary materials such as back sheets for disposable diapers and feminine napkins, packaging materials such as top sheets for dehumidifiers and deoxidizers, building materials such as house wrap, as well as agricultural materials such as mulching sheets.
Tokuyama sells polypropylene films and polyethylene films under the trade names "NF Sheet" and "Porum", respectively. NF Sheet excels in air and moisture permeability, while Porum excels in flexibility. Both products have different grades, from general purpose to high air permeability. Tokuyama sells these products individually and also products laminated with nonwoven fabrics in response to customer demands for better strength and breathability. Laminated NF Sheet is sold as "NFR Sheet", and laminated Porum is sold under the name "Lami Porum". Demand for microporous film is expected to expand in Asia mainly as a sanitary material. In addition to the Tokuyama Factory, where development began in 1973, Group company Shanghai Tokuyama Plastics Co., Ltd. in Shanghai, China started production and sales in spring 2004.
