The Shapal business unit produces and markets products related to aluminum nitride (AlN). Shapal is a trademark of our ceramic products made by sintering aluminum nitride powder, and is also the name of the business.
AlN has high thermal conductivity and strong plasma resistance. Therefore AlN is used as a heat dissipation material in various fields. Tokuyama has the world's largest AlN plant with an annual production capacity of 360 tons based on its independently developed reduction nitriding method. As a result, Tokuyama produces high quality aluminum nitride powder with virtually no impurities.
In addition to selling aluminum nitride powder, Tokuyama also sells it as granulated powder, sintered substrates, and sintered molded components. Tokuyama also sells aluminum nitride as processed products with a thin film of metal applied to the surface of aluminum nitride substrates (thin-film metalized products).
Accompanying technological advancements in many fields and higher semiconductor densities, needs are increasing for better thermal conductivity and durability. Based on these circumstances, the range of applications for aluminum nitride products is expanding.
For example, aluminum nitride substrate, Shapal, is used as a heat sink substrate
for motor drive circuits in trains, etc. It is also used in hybrid cars and electric vehicles. In addition, characteristics, such as high thermal conductivity and halogen plasma resistance,
realize high performance of semiconductor manufacturing equipment. Thin-film metalized products are used as substrates for high-temperature electronic components, such as laser diodes
for optical pick-ups in DVDs and laser diodes for optical communications.
Tokuyama aims to expand operations more and more through meeting high level demands of modern society.
