Q: When was the company established?

A: The company was founded in 1918 to produce soda ash, a basic material for industry that was being imported to Japan at that time. From that point, Tokuyama broadened its businesses to include inorganic chemicals and petrochemicals. From the 1970s into the 1980s, the company expanded into specialty processing fields to produce high-value-added products.


Tokuyama is preparing for its 100th anniversary in 2018. To further raise corporate value, we are bolstering strategic growth businesses and enhancing international competitiveness by concentrating investment in strategically targeted areas.

Q: What are Tokuyama's main products and businesses?

A: Tokuyama Corporation is engaged in four main business segments: Chemicals, Specialty Products, Cement and Life & Amenity. Representative products are: Caustic soda in the Chemicals Business; Polycrystalline silicon in the Specialty Products Business; Active pharmaceutical ingredients in the Life & Amenity Business.


Companies in the Tokuyama Group manufacture products in a wide range of fields, including semiconductor-related products, eyeglass lenses and dental materials.

Q: Please explain Tokuyama's Vision.

A: Tokuyama put in place the overarching vision of undertaking a new foundation in May 2016. Please refer to the Our Vision page in the About Us section of this website for the details.

Q: In the future, what sort of businesses is Tokuyama planning to invest in?

A: Under its new Medium-Term Management Plan unveiled in May 2016, and as a part of its medium-to-long-term strategy, Tokuyama will endeavor to become a global leader in advanced materials through unique technologies and a leader in Japan in each of the Cement and Chemicals businesses through strengthening competitiveness.


As a part of its Capital Expenditure Plan, Tokuyama will engage in a variety of activities. For example, investment will be aimed at increasing the quality of polycrystalline silicon as well as upgrading and expanding heat sink materials in an effort to further reinforce the Company’s strengths. We will also set aside a separate amount totaling ¥20 billion to fund strategic investments in both growth and traditional business.

Q: What kind of measures is the company taking to improve its corporate governance?

A: Tokuyama recognizes the central importance of corporate governance for increasing its corporate value, and, therefore, conducts routine inspections and other necessary measures to ensure that the corporate governance system operates effectively at all times.


In June 2011, we established the position of external director to improve the supervision of the Board of Directors. We also introduced an executive officer system in April 2011 to clearly separate the functions of management supervision and business execution.


Meanwhile, the Company's four auditors, two of which are appointed as external auditors, work to maintain sound operations by ensuring transparency and impartiality in management.

Q: What systems has Tokuyama put in place to ensure compliance?

A: Compliance is the basis for trust in a corporation. With this in mind, we have created a compliance system that provides a framework for ensuring strict compliance among all employees. Specifically, two committees have been set up to promote compliance: the Risk Management and Compliance Committee, which provides direction and support for putting compliance-related activities into practice, and the Helpline Committee, which operates and supervises a helpline system for reporting on possible compliance violations inside the Tokuyama Group.

A: We pursue corporate social responsibility (CSR) in accordance with our basic management policy of reflecting society's concerns in our policies. Therefore, Tokuyama implements CSR activities that are approved and appreciated by various members of society, recognizing that its ongoing activities can contribute to a sustainable future for everyone. Furthermore, with the aim of being a long-lasting company, Tokuyama seeks to enhance its standing with all stakeholders.

Q: What kind of research and development is the company pursuing?

A: Utilizing the Company’s unique technologies such as high purification nurtured up to this day, Tokuyama is carrying out research and development in three fields: information and electronics, the environment and energy, and lifestyle and medical products. At present, we are particularly focusing on the first two of these fields, which have already played an important role in the development of Tokuyama's proprietary technologies and are anticipated to see further growth in the future. While building on our own technology development, we are also collaborating with other research institutes and companies to respond more quickly to contemporary demands and develop new technologies and products that are useful for society.
