Summary

Tokusil is mainly used as reinforcing filler for synthetic and natural rubber. Adding Tokusil to rubber effectively improves its various physical properties.

It is also used as an adsorption carrier in liquids such as agricultural chemicals, and in toothpaste,newspapers, and ink.

Characteristics

The primary particles of Tokusil aggregate to form the secondary particles in the bunched grape state and these secondary particles further agglomerate to constitute the third particles in products. Precipitated silica has a true density of 2.2g/cm3, but since the network structure has numerous pores and voids inside, Tokusil has the appearance of a lightweight, fluffy, white powder.

By altering manufacturing conditions, products of various characteristics can be tailor-made.

Compared with other inorganic chemical products, Tokusil is higher in liquid absorption, smaller in single particle size and is non-crystalline.

Others

Tokusil is also called “White Carbon" in spite of the silica-base powder. This is because “carbon black", which is often used for rubber reinforcement, is black and Tokusil, which is used for the same application, is white.

Applications

Reinforcing filler for synthetic rubber

In synthetic rubbers such as SBR (styrene-butadiene rubber), reinforcing agents such as silica are added as filler to obtain moldability and strength. Carbon black filled rubber products, as generally formulated, are black in color. However, Tokusil filled rubber can be made into colored products, or even white colored products.

Reinforcing filler for tires

When used as a rubber reinforcement agent in tires, Tokusil decreases rolling resistance and saves fuel costs without diminishing grip performance in comparison with the carbon black which is usually used as reinforcing agent.

Reinforcing filler for silicone rubber.

Tokusil is added to silicone rubber as a reinforcing agent. Silica improves the reinforcement of the silicone rubber. There are two types of silica. One of them is fumed silica and the other one is precipitated silica. The fumed silica gives the silicone transparency and beautiful color tone, but the ordinary precipitated silica does not have such characteristics. On the other hand, Tokusil facilitates transparency and color tone well in a balance.

Powderization and anti-caking of agricultural chemicals and other liquids

When a liquid is added to Tokusil, the liquid is absorbed in its pores. For this reason, the surface of the silica does not wet and Tokusil retains its properties as powder. It does not cake. This property makes Tokusil well suited for use in cosmetics, fire extinguishers, animal feed, and pigments.

The strike through prevention of printing ink for lightweight paper.

As paper comes lighter, it accompanies a thinner thickness of paper and a lower density of pulp. Under the circumstances, ink often bleeds and strikes through the back surface of paper. When Tokusil is added in the formulation of paper making, Tokusil absorbs excessive ink and prevents such troubles as mentioned above.

Filler for toothpaste

Since Tokusil has a three-dimensional structure with a lot of gap and space, liquid is trapped and held in the structure, thereby reducing its fluidity and behaving as a viscosity thickener. At the same time, hardness of silica itself provides an abrasive property so that Tokusil can scrape dental plaque off.

Heat Insulating materials

With numerous pores of Tokusil, Tokusil provides a high heat-insulating effect. When those pores are deaerated to vacuum, Tokusil shows an excellent performance as a heat insulating material.

Others

Tokusil has many other applications as a polishing material, frosting of incandescent lamp bulbs, antifoaming agent and so on.
