Product overview

Sodium silicate cullet is a hard glass-like substance widely used as a raw material for products in the chemical industry, such as precipitated silica and silica gel. It is also utilized in civil engineering applications when dissolved into sodium silicate (water glass), which is used to harden soil and prevent water leakage. Tokuyama uses sodium silicate cullet as a source of alkali in its production of soda ash and caustic soda, and as a source of silica for manufacturing silica sand.

Grades

Medium mol, high mol, and extra-high mol

Applications

  • Soil hardening agent and sealant for preventing leakage
  • Raw material for precipitated silica (white carbon)
  • Hydrogen peroxide stabilizer for bleaching paper pulp; ink remover for recycling paper
  • Hardening agent for sand used to make castings
  • Synthetic detergent for construction work; soap additive

Special characteristics

Sodium silicate cullet is generally not used in its normal state. Instead, it is usually dissolved using an autoclave or other equipment so it can be applied as sodium silicate (water glass).

  • Exhibits alkali properties as water glass, with viscosity changing markedly depending on the concentration
  • When a certain amount of acid is added to water glass, it will settle as a solid or gel form of silica (SiO2)
