About About the REOLOSIL™
Hydrophilic / Hydrophobic Series

01 High Purity

REOLOSIL™ is made from highly purified raw materials and manufactured under rigorous process control. As a result, REOLOSIL™ is an amorphous silica fine powder with extremely few impurities.

02 Excellent Dispersibility

Because REOLOSIL™ is gently agglomerated, it can be finely dispersed to the aggregates smaller than light wave length (400~760nm) under optimum dispersion condition.

03 Enormous surface area

REOLOSIL™ consists of extremely fine particles with large specific surface areas on the order of 90~380m²/g and particles averaging 7~22nm in diameter. It is amorphous silica which does not have internal specific surface area because of manufactured by high temperature reaction in gas phase.

04 Surface Chemistry

Silanol groups are found on the surface of REOLOSIL™. Depending on the type of resin to be dispersed, it is possible to obtain desired thickening characteristics by separately using hydrophilic REOLOSIL™ and hydrophobic REOLOSIL™ modified with surface treatment agent.

Structure

REOLOSIL™ has a loose agglomerate structure and can be finely dispersed in paints.

Applications

By adding REOLOSIL™, thickening and thixotropic* properties are imparted, enabling both workability and anti-drip properties.

Thixotropic property: The property of temporarily reducing viscosity when an external force is applied.

Characteristics

There are grades that are best suited for various usage environments (resin polarity, dispersion condition, etc.).

Resin polarity, dispersion and rheology control

Hydrophilic Series in case of low dispersion × Polar resin or high dispersion × Non-Polar resin,
Hydrophobic Series in case of medium dispersion × Polar resin or medium dispersion × Non-Polar resin
are particularly effective in thickening and thixotropic effect.

*Resin : Polyester resin *Silica addition ratio: 2.5 PHR

For low dispersion, silica with a small specific surface area,
and for high dispersion, silica with a large specific surface area
is particularly effective in thickening and imparting thixotropy.
